India's Wellness Tourism Market Crosses Rs 2 Lakh Crore as Yoga Retreats Boom
India's wellness tourism market has crossed the Rs 2 lakh crore mark in 2025-26, growing at 20% annually and making the country the world's fastest-growing wellness tourism destination. The surge is driven by a global boom in yoga retreats, Ayurvedic treatments, and meditation centres, with international arrivals for wellness purposes increasing 45% over the previous year.
Top Destinations and Trends
Rishikesh remains the undisputed wellness capital, hosting over 2 million wellness tourists annually. However, emerging destinations like Coorg (Karnataka), Munnar (Kerala), and Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh) are rapidly gaining popularity. Kerala's Ayurvedic tourism alone contributes Rs 12,000 crore annually, with luxury Ayurvedic resorts charging Rs 50,000-1,00,000 per day and maintaining waitlists of several months.
The fastest-growing segment is 'digital detox retreats', where guests surrender their electronic devices for 7-14 days while engaging in yoga, meditation, and nature immersion. Properties offering such retreats report 95% occupancy rates and 40% repeat visitor rates. Corporate wellness retreats have also surged, with companies like TCS, Infosys, and Google India sending teams for 3-5 day wellness programmes.
"India is to wellness what France is to wine tourism — it's the authentic source. The world is waking up to what Indians have known for 5,000 years: true health encompasses body, mind, and spirit," said the Tourism Minister at the National Wellness Tourism Conference in Kerala.
The government has launched the 'Heal in India' initiative, providing subsidized loans to entrepreneurs setting up wellness facilities in rural areas. The programme aims to create 500 certified wellness centres in tier-2 and tier-3 cities by 2028. International wellness chains like Six Senses, Aman, and COMO are expanding their Indian footprint, with 15 new luxury wellness resorts planned across the country in the next three years.
