Centre Announces Major Cabinet Reshuffle Ahead of Budget Session

Centre Announces Major Cabinet Reshuffle Ahead of Budget Session

Prime Minister Narendra Modi carried out a significant cabinet reshuffle on Monday, inducting 12 new faces and reassigning portfolios of several senior ministers ahead of the crucial Budget session. The changes reflect the government's focus on strengthening economic ministries and giving greater representation to states where assembly elections are approaching.

Notable Changes

The Finance Ministry remains unchanged, but the Commerce and Industry portfolio has been assigned to a rising leader from Maharashtra. Three ministers of state have been elevated to cabinet rank, including the junior minister for IT who will now head a new Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies.

Regional representation has been a key consideration, with new inductees from Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Odisha, and Rajasthan. The average age of the new ministers is 48, signaling an attempt to project a younger leadership image ahead of the general elections cycle.

"The reshuffle aims to bring fresh energy and specialized expertise to key ministries. The creation of an AI ministry shows our commitment to positioning India as a global technology leader," said the PMO in an official statement.

Opposition leaders criticized the reshuffle as politically motivated, pointing out that most new inductees come from electorally significant states. However, governance experts have noted that some of the new appointments bring genuine domain expertise, particularly in technology and agriculture sectors.
