PV Sindhu Announces Retirement from International Badminton After Stellar Career
Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Thursday announced her retirement from international badminton, bringing down the curtain on a career that inspired millions and put Indian badminton on the global map. The 30-year-old from Hyderabad made the announcement at a packed press conference, flanked by her longtime coach Pullela Gopichand and family members.
A Career of Firsts
Sindhu's trophy cabinet includes an Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020, an Olympic silver at Rio 2016, two World Championship titles, and multiple BWF Super Series crowns. She finishes as the most decorated Indian badminton player in history, with a total of 42 international medals across all major tournaments.
Her rivalry with Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu-ying and Japan's Akane Yamaguchi produced some of the most memorable matches in badminton history. The 2019 World Championship final, where Sindhu demolished Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7, remains one of the most dominant performances in the sport's history.
"Badminton has given me everything — purpose, joy, pride, and the honor of representing India on the biggest stages. It's time to step back and give the next generation their moment," Sindhu said, visibly emotional.
Sindhu will transition into a mentoring role with the Badminton Association of India and has also expressed interest in sports administration. Prime Minister Modi lauded her contribution, calling her "an inspiration to every young Indian who dares to dream big."
